Greetings Fellow Dice Fans!

This week’s confusing card is Maria Hill, Avengers Liaison, from the Marvel Age of Ultron set. Sometimes wording can be very confusing and this card is no exception. Many folks get confused about when they can use abilities like Maria Hill’s.

Maria HillRuling
Maria Hill, among many other cards, do not state that they must be active for their abilities to trigger.

For almost all black text abilities to work, they must be active characters in the Field Zone. There may be a few rare exceptions, but those cards will have text stating that they do not need to be active for their ability to work.

Maria Hill does not have that exception in her text, so she must be active for her ability to trigger.

The situations that can cause her ability to trigger are:
1. Maria Hill and another Shield Energy character attack and are not blocked.
2. Maria Hill and another Shield Energy character are sent to the Used Pile via a card ability, such as Storm, Wind Rider (Uncommon from Avengers vs X-Men).

This wording also leads some to believe that you can purchase Maria Hill and another Shield Energy character at the same time and then put both into your Prep Area. This is not the case. When you purchase dice, you purchase them one at a time. You are able to spend the energy for multiple characters at once, but each die you purchase goes to your Used Pile individually.

Here is the link to the official Maria Hill Ruling.

Competitive Play Rating
For a competitive team, Maria Hill is not particularly useful. She only works for herself and another Shield Energy character. Shield type characters are not a predominant energy type, and her ability is not that good for a major tournament scene. The amount of churn a tourney team can produce would make her ability almost useless. Unless there is a combo with her that I haven’t found yet, I don’t see her being used in major events any time soon.

Maria Hill, Avengers Liaison gets a competitive play rating of zero out of five stars.

Casual Play Rating
Now, for a casual setting, I think she would be good with specific teams that can utilize her ability. You can’t just throw her on any team and be able to use her effectively. She actually has to have purpose. Even with purpose, using her ability effectively is very difficult – and I speak from experience.

Her fielding cost is excellent on all levels and her stats are decent for chump blocking. There are far better chump blockers out there though, so I can’t even give her points as a blocker because of characters like Beast, Mutate #666. Overall, she’s cheap to buy and has decent stats and fielding costs, but she needs a team that can utilize her ability to justify adding her to any team.

Maria Hill, Avengers Liaison gets a casual play rating of one out of five stars.
