Greetings Fellow Comic Fans!

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. I don’t always read all the comics I order, because I’m only collecting some of them. Others are ones I may have started reading, but lost interest in but I still order them. You never know when you may want to go back and revisit a series at a later date.

Outer Darkness #8

Well, I wanted to know more about Hydzek – and I got what I asked for! I think Hydzek is my favorite character in Outer Darkness. I relate to her in several ways and I think that’s probably why I like her so much – I get her. She excelled in her academy training and was kind of naïve enough to be manipulated by a guy into throwing her life away. Now she’s stuck in a place that she really doesn’t want to be in. She feels trapped and has a desperate need to escape. She even goes as far as trying to ditch the nun when all the poop hit the fan on the Charon. I guess it’s a good thing Sister Magdalena kept her from running away. If Hydzek runs, she’ll likely be hunted and her life will be worse than it is now… maybe.

Life aboard the Charon appears difficult and Admiral Prakash obviously sent Hydzek there to keep her from taking over his position. I don’t think he needed to ruin her career with all the fake convictions – he just wanted to do it so she couldn’t come back from it. I don’t like him at all, and I’m not a fan of his daughter either. I don’t think she’s a badly written character – I think she’s written perfectly because I have a strong opinion about her. There’s a huge difference in a poorly written character and a character that’s written so well, that you have strong emotions about them. I’m convinced Soreena Prakash is up to no good and I think she’s working with Satalis. I think Admiral Prakash is giving both of them orders to take control of demons and the possessed – maybe so he can make his own demonic army and take over the galaxy. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

I’m still suspicious of Sister Magdalena too. I know we saw her as a captive of the ghost house, but what if that was all a facade? She just hit Hydzek with the emotional, ‘Maybe we can be friends?’ line in an effort to keep Hydzek on the Charon. To what purpose? There are plenty of other folks on the Charon – why put so much effort into keeping someone aboard that’s desperately trying to leave? There are definitely easier targets for manipulation. And then she drops a HUGE secret on Hydzek – Sister Magdalena has a bun in the oven. How did she slip this by everyone? I definitely didn’t see it coming.

John Layman posed the question on Twitter – for fun, who would you cast as Captain Joshua Rigg and Administrator Soreena Prakash? Well, this issue had me thinking about the entire crew.

Joshua Rigg: Anthony Mackie – or – Roger Cross
Soreena Prakash: Morena Baccarin
Agwe: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – or – Ian Verdun
Alastor Satalis: Benedict Cumberbatch
Baxter: Samantha Morton
Malachi Reno: John Rhys-Davies
Willits: Christopher Lloyd (Voice – CGI character)
Malona Hydzek: Michelle Pfeiffer – or – Kate Fleetwood
Zaphus: John Lithgow
Elox: Doug Jones
Sato Shin: Keanu Reeves
The Crone: Zoe Saldana – or – Krysten Ritter – or – Kate Fleetwood (Any one of these ladies could pull off a stellar performance in heavy prosthetics while being able to play the sexy night version too.)
Sister Magdalena: Eline Powell – or – Elizabeth Henstridge
Gallu: Keith David (Voice)

Naturally, this is just who I see in all these characters and if this was ever made into a movie or show, the casting would likely be drastically different. Sooooo… Netflix or Hulu, are you folks listening? They both make amazing shows and I love lots of what they do. How about one of you streaming folks pick this up and run with it?

Unnatural #11

It seems that everything is coming full circle. Leslie decides that she’s had enough and it looks like she’s started an internal conflict with the Albino. I think the death of Pif is what really sent her over that mental ledge and she’s not a scared little girl anymore. It seems that she’s found her inner strength and she’s going to need it if she’s going after the Albino.

Carol has escaped into the hallways of where she’s being held and she’s found Khal’s little sister. She bursts into the classroom and helps to inspire the youngsters into rising up against the evil overseer. Carol takes Shea with her, but she eventually runs into Maxime. Maxime does the typical villain thing (which I like) and monologues about her past with Carol. We finally see how Carol gets her scars and we learn that she was one of the cult folks that wanted to control society. We see a good deal of Maxime’s journey to become a shaman and prepare herself to take the Albino’s power from Leslie.

After the monologue, we believe Maxime has fired her gun at Carol, but Leslie has come up behind Maxime and stopped the bullet from even leaving the gun – and with her bare hand! It appears that Leslie has gained control over the Albino, and it doesn’t look like she’s all too happy to see her mother.

With the next issue being the final one, what’s Leslie going to do? Is she going to kill her mother? How will they stop the government from enforcing those ridiculous laws? Maybe taking out Maxime will solve that – since she’s behind the the ones pulling those strings. What’s going to happen to all the detained folks and to the resistance folks like Carol? How is all of this going to be wrapped up in one final issue?! I have complete faith in Mirka Andolfo to complete the story. If she leaves it open for a secondary series, I’m fine with that too.

Conclusion

I’m a little sad that Unnatural is coming to an end, but we knew from the beginning that it was only going to be 12 issues. I haven’t found any definitive information about whether or not Outer Darkness is going to be an ongoing title or limited/mini series. I want Outer Darkness to keep going for as long as John Layman and Afu Chan want to keep it going. They are a powerhouse team and I am totally in love with this book. There are lots of books that I really like, but Outer Darkness has been the book that I am most anxious to get my hands on each month. Grumble and Unnatural come in at a close second, just behind Outer Darkness.
