Greetings Fellow Comic Fans!

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. I don’t always read all the comics I order, because I’m only collecting some of them. Others are ones I may have started reading, but lost interest in but I still order them. You never know when you may want to go back and revisit a series at a later date.

Sea of Stars #2

This was a great issue, full of backstory and catch-up with Kadyn’s dad, Gil. We get to see a glimpse into Kadyn and Gil’s pasts and also get a little of Gil’s perspective on their relationship before and after Kadyn’s mother passed. It appears that Gil loved his wife a lot and he worked very hard to provide for his family. It obviously took him away for long periods of time, but he did what he could.

I’m impressed at how resourceful Gil is – and lucky. He survived being eaten by a space whale thing; took out all of those ape creatures that attacked him; and flung himself into the dead of space in hopes of reaching a derelict ship. He even survived being attacked by a security drone and almost being eaten by a weird space plant on that ship. I don’t believe Gil’s dead after the light speed jump either. I bet one of the weird artifacts he was hauling on his ship gave him some power or something the way Kadyn was given power.

And that dude on the last page is super cool looking. I mean, there’s cool, and then there’s – “I have a flaming space bird as a pet and look like a tribal shaman in space” cool. But looking cool doesn’t mean he’s a good guy. I’m pretty sure this is an antagonist and I’m excitedly awaiting more issues!

Section Zero #5

I had a difficult time reading this issue. The story is jumping around a lot, not just between characters, but between moments in time. I had to go back and skim over the previous issues to keep the timeline straight. The story isn’t bad and I enjoy it, but I feel like this story would be best to read as a trade or all in one sitting. Having these books released once a month makes it difficult to follow. It would make a great TV series though.

Sam is a jerk. He will do whatever he can to achieve his goals – by any means. He hurt his friend Pepe, and then Pepe died as a direct result of his actions. Karma happens though, Sam is turned into a creature like Sargasso. He had to, or he’d die. At least, that’s what I get from this issue.

And there’s a kid on the Ghost Soldiers’ team now?! I bet that’s going to give them an advantage because nobody is going to suspect a kid. And oh my goodness – the Loch Ness Monster too… This book is getting silly. But I still like it and all of its 90’s retro glory.

Conclusion

Section Zero is silly with a dark undertone. And when I say silly, I mean ridiculous – in a good way. I don’t mean that it’s silly, like funny. It has it’s comedy moments, but there is a more serious story hidden under the absurd and over the top antics. Sea of Stars is just a really good book, so far. I look forward to the next installments for both of these books!
