Greetings Fellow Comic Fans!

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. I don’t always read all the comics I order, because I’m only collecting some of them. Others are ones I may have started reading, but lost interest in but I still order them. You never know when you may want to go back and revisit a series at a later date.

Star Trek: Year Five #8

I don’t know where to start. I guess, with what I didn’t like – the Tholians floating in space is an issue for me. I’m still bothered that they’re floating in space without a heat suit or something to keep their body temperatures up. I don’t know why it bothers me as much as it does, but it’s definitely something I wish I could find an explanation for.

I really liked how the gender identity discussion was handled. It showed two different viewpoints being discussed in a civil manner. It’s a shame that people can’t have more discussions like this. Neither Ayal or Sulu are wrong in their view of gender identity. Gender identity is a personal thing and it doesn’t ultimately define who we are as people. It was a great moment that I enjoyed reading, but I felt like it was rushed. I wanted more romance build up between the two. I think that’s just my repressed romantic trying to surface.

And then, OH MY GOODNESS – Isis and Gary Seven! I didn’t think that the shapeshifter would actually be Isis! That’s crazy awesome! This series just got a million times more interesting and there are so many things buzzing around in my head. I am so excited for issue nine!

Conclusion

I want to see more of the relationship between Sulu and Ayal. I also want to see what’s going on with Gary and Isis and why they’re back. So much excitement and my brain continues to remind me of the Tholians floating in space… I still want an answer to that.

Invisible Kingdom #7

This is exactly what Grix needs! She needs allies, even if they are scavengers and pirate types. I hope she hasn’t messed up by alerting those Lux folks and telling them they’re in danger. I don’t know why Turo would be giving Grix and her crew accommodations and practically the run of his ship if he had ill intentions. I don’t think he’d hurt the Lux folks either, and what Grix did may have just got them killed. Or I could be completely off-base about Turo. Maybe this is all a ruse and Grix sees what I don’t.

Turo definitely saw that ‘spark’ between Grix and Vess. Well, the spark from Vess towards Grix. Grix is oblivious to it but everyone else sees it. I’m curious to see where this goes between those two. I’m also curious to see what happens between Turo and Grix and if those Lux folks are in trouble or not!

Star Trek: Picard Countdown #1

This issue is setting the stage for the new Picard series that’s going to air in January 2020 on CBS All Access. I found all the information exciting and interesting, but I think it’s because I’m such a huge Trekkie. If I wasn’t, or if I was only a fan of the cinematic/TV content, I might not find this issue to be that interesting. There are plenty of fans that only watch the movies and shows and I don’t think they’re missing out if they don’t read this mini series. But naturally, I want everyone to be as excited as I am to read this series!

I really like the blonde Romulan, Governor Shiana. Blonde Romulans are not very common. The only one I can think of is Sela, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are others. Seeing Shiana gives me hope that Sela may return. I’m suspicious that Shiana might be Sela’s daughter. Sela was born in 2345 and this story currently takes place in 2385-2386. It’s totally possible and it would be a huge treat to see Denise Crosby reprise her role as Sela!

I also want to mention that I love Commander Raffi Musiker! Her personality is a nice balance to Picard, from what I’ve seen here. And I’m dying over the new uniforms! They’re so sleek and formal. I’m super excited for the next issue and even more excited for the new series!

Conclusion

I had two great books to read this week. They both left me with anticipation for the next issues and the Picard book has gotten me so hyped up for the series!

Captain Marvel #12

Well, I was thrown for a loop in this issue. I thought Star was going to be the dark Captain Marvel. Guess what – I was WRONG! This issue starts with an epic fight between Carol and Thor, which ultimately ends with Thor’s beheading. We don’t actually see Carol do the deed, so it’s possible that it could be a facade, but there’s no way to really know until we’re told for sure. But something is obviously going on because Carol does NOT want to hurt Thor. But in the end, she delivers Thor’s head to Vox Supreme. If you read Death of the Inhumans, you’d know that the Vox are the next stage of evolution for Inhumans. They were engineered by the Kree to rid their subjects of the humanity in them. The Vox leader is Vox Supreme, who we see here – and he’s terrifying! We know that Carol is part Kree, but because she’s on the side of Humanity, she probably has no ability to control or manage Vox Supreme.

I want to know how this all started. How did he get Carol under his influence? Did she really kill Thor? Is she really going to kill the other Avengers? We know comics like to resurrect characters all the time, so if the Avengers die, are they going to stay dead? Where was Vox Supreme hiding? Is the Kree behind this? So many questions and more keep coming to mind. It’s times like this that I wish I was able to read the entire story in one sitting, but I have to wait for the next issue to release!

David #1

Well, I wish there was more to this first issue because I’m not completely sure where this is going. The writing isn’t bad, and it’s a good issue as far as background context goes, but I need more. It’s a tragic story about a kid who’s zombie-like. The cause was from a curse put on his mother while she was pregnant with him, by a woman in New Orleans. His mother died in childbirth and his father hid him from the world. His father died and so he went looking for the woman that cursed his mother. We end with him burning her shop down. So, I’m confused as to where this story is going. I need issue two to be able to make a solid opinion on the story as a whole.

I love the art for the story, and it’s in black and white – not color. I like some stories being done in black and white, like this one. I think the decision to not do color was a good one for this title.

Star Trek: Discovery – Aftermath #3

This story was good. It wasn’t amazing or great, but it was a good filler story for the gap after season two. It gives us the events that led Spock to his decision for returning to Starfleet and it also shows us more of L’rell’s resolve and her love for the Klingon Empire. She will do what it takes to protect the Empire, even if it means she has to destroy her own ship.

The Shadows of Kahless seem like a group of radicals and homegrown terrorists. I wonder if they’re going to show up anymore in future Star Trek content? If you like seeing additional story material, this series is a good one to read.

Outer Darkness #12

WOAH!!! I thought the crew was DEAD! I had no clue that it was a hallucination. Well played, Mr. Layman. Did Afu Chan know they weren’t dead when he did the art for issue 11? If he did, he didn’t put any indicators in the art for that previous issue. I was also convinced Admiral Prakash was dead too. Surprise! He’s not! My heart can’t take this! Admiral Prakash kind of planned on Rigg pulling these shenanigans. He didn’t plan on his daughter staying on the Charon though so there’s a wrench thrown into his plan now, whatever that plan may be. I think it’s something to do with bringing Rochelle back. This should be a wild ride in season two!

We still have a pregnant, time-displaced nun hiding on the ship, and Satalis with his own ship now en-route to catch the Charon. I’m so excited to see what happens with all of this! Everything I thought I knew is a lie! Rigg isn’t as cold and cruel as I thought he was – because he didn’t actually murder a bunch of folks.

I want to see this as a TV series… someone please make this. This is too good to not be a series!

Conclusion

I enjoyed all the books this week, and even had an additional book – David. I picked that book up at the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention on November 16, so I worked it into this week’s recap. That weekend was the release of David. I wasn’t disappointed with any of the books this week. Outer Darkness is the gem of the bunch with Captain Marvel shining almost as bright.

Doctor Strange Annual #1

There were two stories in this annual: “A Hallowed Evening” and “Treat”.

The first story, “A Hallowed Evening” is a lighter read that doesn’t take itself super serious. I thoroughly enjoyed the Halloween themed fun. I was surprised, but also not surprised at how much of a jerk Strange was. He was overly rude to Zelma, who is supposed to be his apprentice and friend – in some capacity. But overall, this was still a fun read.

Talk about going from zero to a million in one second flat! We went from a fun, not-too-serious, Halloween story to a story of a murder demon that wears the skins of folks and corrupts others that they’re close to. It was terrifying but also another good story. The murder demon thing is hunting a sword called the Gu Baodao (which has a bunch of special characters that it won’t let me add here). We find out that it’s not actually a sword, but a spell that’s tailored for Wong to use against Strange, should he go crazy or turn evil or something. But using that spell to kill Strange would kill Wong too. Now, I can’t recall if this Gu Baodao has been mentioned before in a Strange book, but it made this terrifying story even more morbid and dark – and I love it. Well done, Pornsak Pichetshote, well done.

Invisible Kingdom #6

I’m not sure what happened to me with this issue, but I feel like I dredged through it until the last three pages. I don’t know if I just wasn’t digging the content or what, but I had a really hard time reading this month’s issue. I don’t mind a story about weird love triangles, but something about the way Eline was acting bothered me a lot. I didn’t get the impression that she was as childish and immature in the beginning as she acted in this issue. Vess isn’t acting like herself either. She’s much more aggressive and easy to agitate. It could be the stress of recent events, but I don’t like the change in their personalities. I guess we’ll see what comes of all of this – if anything.

When I got to the moment that Turo boarded the ship, I was much more tuned in. For a scavenger of sorts, he seemed more reasonable than what I expected. He just wanted to steal the Sundog… he was going to let them be guests on his ship. That definitely seems more reasonable than other scavenger types because they kill you first and then take your stuff. What I think Grix and crew should do – leave Turo on the Sundog and steal his ship. That might put Lux a little behind on tracking them. I guess we’ll have to wait until late November to see what happens next!

Stark Trek: Year Five #7

It sounds like the silvery-blackish Tholian might be a shape-shifter of sorts. The Tholians refer to it as a ‘trespasser from beyond the stars’ and they mention that it took their form again. Being a huge Trek fan, my mind instantly jumps to the idea that it’s a Founder. But I highly doubt that’s the case. In TOS, there were several creatures that could shape shift or take on the appearance of other creatures. It could easily be any one of those (maybe not the M-113 Salt Vampire), but Trelane comes to mind first. This whole ordeal seems a little too involved and too intricate of a plan for Trelane though. He has a flighty personality and the longer something is drawn out, the more bored he gets and is likely to move on. I highly doubt Trelane’s directly involved in this. It’s also possible that it’s a creature or person that we’ve never seen before. I remember in the first issue of this series, there was an ominous dark humanoid figure that had a weapon of some sort pointed at Kirk. That figure’s speech bubble was also black with white text, just like the dark Tholian. I am willing to bet that the dark Tholian and the shadowy figure are one in the same! If not, those two are from the same species of shape shifters. Whoever this entity is, they’ve woven a web of deception and have tried to start an interstellar war between Tholia and the Federation.

There’s some trouble that occurs in this issue – the Enterprise hits a Tholian Web! They also discover another ship trapped in the web. The ship is from a race of aquatic humanoids called the I’Qosa. Ayal is all that’s left of the ship’s crew, but they’re more than willing to help Kirk and Sulu with a plan to free the Enterprise from the web. Before they can fully implement their plan, the Tholians start to close in!

Here comes my ‘but, wait a minute’ voice. Tholians can’t be exposed to low temperatures for an extended period of time, because their carapace will crack and they’ll die. They require a temperature of 480 Kelvin (207 °C, 404 °F) and anything 380 Kelvin (106 °C, 224 °F) or less could spell trouble. So my ‘but, wait a minute’ voice says: “But, wait a minute – how are the Tholians bip-bopping around in open space?” Are the web filaments generating extreme temperatures as well as energy, allowing them to scurry about like spiders? Are they wearing super thin translucent space suits? Are they immune to space temperatures of 2.73 Kelvin (-270.42 °C, -454.75 °F)? I’d love to know what’s going on in this final panel because I can’t find any information that explains it. The best assumption I have is that the energy from the web filaments helps them generate heat. Hopefully this gets explained or someone can point me to the information I need to help me figure this out.

Conclusion

I liked all three books this week. I wouldn’t say I loved them all, but definitely liked them. Invisible Kingdom was my least favorite, which is surprising to me. It’s usually one of my favorites. Star Trek was my favorite this week, even with the weird Tholians in space thing going on. The Doctor Strange Annual was just a fun read.

Captain Marvel #8

Carol Danvers is definitely suffering from sabotage. Someone is out to get her and I’m pretty sure it’s Minn-Erva doing it. I also think Minnerva is actually Star. There are too many similarities and it’s too much of a coincidence that she shows up a week after Star. Carol just can’t seem to catch a break. Everything she does is painted as ‘bad’ by the media and they don’t have all the facts. I’m afraid of where this is going to lead Carol. I’m afraid that she’s going to take Minnerva up on her offer and that’s not going to help her reputation at all. And I don’t like Tony Stark either, but if it were me and my powers were acting up, he’s the first person I would have went to. There isn’t another person on the planet that could help her more than Stark can right now. I hope that the first panel of the next issue has Carol giving Minnerva a false handshake just so she can toss Minnerva into space, but I have a feeling that’s not what’s going to happen.

At least Jessica and her other friends were there to show her some love and support. But that’s not exactly what she needs right now. She needs folks to back off of her. She needs some positive press to help alleviate some of her negative self-image. It just seems like Carol’s entire life is spinning out of control.

And oh my goodness – Goose/Chewie (not sure which name is correct at this point) – She is now one of Carnage’s minions because of the Grendel symbiote (Maybe? Not sure if this is all true). I have no clue what all that means because I’m not reading Carnage/Venom stories, but it’s likely not a good thing. Carnage is bad news and Venom can’t make up its mind if it’s good, evil, or an anti-hero. Here’s hoping we don’t see Carol taken over by a symbiote – because then the Marvel Universe would probably cease to exist.

Dark Horse
The Orville #1 of 2

This is GREAT! I love this two part series already. It’s filling in the blanks between season one and season two of the TV series, The Orville. If you haven’t watched any of the Orville yet, you’re going to be lost. If you plan to watch the series, but just haven’t yet, go ahead and pick up this two part series – and then go start season one – now.

This issue shows us how Kelly met Cassius and better explains Topa’s rapid growth. I love the side story so far too, with Ed and Gordon on the planet of penguin people. So far, everything that’s happened has been fairly predictable, but like I’ve mentioned in previous articles – I like predictable sometimes. I like that this book was predictable. I also like how easy and light of a read it was. I sometimes want a smooth story that doesn’t require a ton of in depth thinking. I was hoping this two part series was going to be like that. I have enough complex and deep stories to read in my other books and it was relaxing to read something like this.

Ed and Gordon were in the shuttle on their way to a conference. They found a distress beacon and went looking for the Burton, which is likely named for LeVar Burton who portrays Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation. If not, that’s a funny coincidence. The beacon was over a hundred years old, but they had to follow protocol and check it out. The Burton crashed on this planet they found, and the cause of the crash is currently unknown. The cannon on the ship is what shot them out of the sky, but we don’t know yet if it was automated or intentional. It looks like the life forms in the area go to the ruins of the ship for food. I don’t have enough knowledge of the Orville’s universe to know if they had food synthesizers on the Burton or not. So someone could be using technology to create food and keep the inhabitants under their control. We also don’t know if anyone survived and had children on the planet. It’s possible, even though the penguin dude didn’t know what a human was. If there are any humans here, they’re either disguising themselves or they’ve likely been mutated from the radiation that Ed detected.

So many new questions, which are sure to be answered in the next issue! At least, I hope they are since this is a two part series.

Conclusion

I kind of wish I knew more about what was going on in Marvel right now, because when Goose got gobbled by those rats’ tendrils, I thought they were a type of Flerken rat. I had to go Google Flerken to see if there were Flerken rats… which it doesn’t look like there are at the moment. A little more digging on Google led me to a site that says Grendel did it and Goose is now a Carnage minion. I wonder how much of that is going to play into the actual story for Captain Marvel…

The Orville was exactly what I wanted. I wanted a light story that tied into the show. I just really hope it’s wrapped up next issue and doesn’t trail off into another mini series. I don’t mind more mini series, but I want individual mini series stories that don’t tie into each other outside of the show. Guess we’ll find out next month!

Outer Darkness #8

Well, I wanted to know more about Hydzek – and I got what I asked for! I think Hydzek is my favorite character in Outer Darkness. I relate to her in several ways and I think that’s probably why I like her so much – I get her. She excelled in her academy training and was kind of naïve enough to be manipulated by a guy into throwing her life away. Now she’s stuck in a place that she really doesn’t want to be in. She feels trapped and has a desperate need to escape. She even goes as far as trying to ditch the nun when all the poop hit the fan on the Charon. I guess it’s a good thing Sister Magdalena kept her from running away. If Hydzek runs, she’ll likely be hunted and her life will be worse than it is now… maybe.

Life aboard the Charon appears difficult and Admiral Prakash obviously sent Hydzek there to keep her from taking over his position. I don’t think he needed to ruin her career with all the fake convictions – he just wanted to do it so she couldn’t come back from it. I don’t like him at all, and I’m not a fan of his daughter either. I don’t think she’s a badly written character – I think she’s written perfectly because I have a strong opinion about her. There’s a huge difference in a poorly written character and a character that’s written so well, that you have strong emotions about them. I’m convinced Soreena Prakash is up to no good and I think she’s working with Satalis. I think Admiral Prakash is giving both of them orders to take control of demons and the possessed – maybe so he can make his own demonic army and take over the galaxy. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.

I’m still suspicious of Sister Magdalena too. I know we saw her as a captive of the ghost house, but what if that was all a facade? She just hit Hydzek with the emotional, ‘Maybe we can be friends?’ line in an effort to keep Hydzek on the Charon. To what purpose? There are plenty of other folks on the Charon – why put so much effort into keeping someone aboard that’s desperately trying to leave? There are definitely easier targets for manipulation. And then she drops a HUGE secret on Hydzek – Sister Magdalena has a bun in the oven. How did she slip this by everyone? I definitely didn’t see it coming.

John Layman posed the question on Twitter – for fun, who would you cast as Captain Joshua Rigg and Administrator Soreena Prakash? Well, this issue had me thinking about the entire crew.

Joshua Rigg: Anthony Mackie – or – Roger Cross
Soreena Prakash: Morena Baccarin
Agwe: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – or – Ian Verdun
Alastor Satalis: Benedict Cumberbatch
Baxter: Samantha Morton
Malachi Reno: John Rhys-Davies
Willits: Christopher Lloyd (Voice – CGI character)
Malona Hydzek: Michelle Pfeiffer – or – Kate Fleetwood
Zaphus: John Lithgow
Elox: Doug Jones
Sato Shin: Keanu Reeves
The Crone: Zoe Saldana – or – Krysten Ritter – or – Kate Fleetwood (Any one of these ladies could pull off a stellar performance in heavy prosthetics while being able to play the sexy night version too.)
Sister Magdalena: Eline Powell – or – Elizabeth Henstridge
Gallu: Keith David (Voice)

Naturally, this is just who I see in all these characters and if this was ever made into a movie or show, the casting would likely be drastically different. Sooooo… Netflix or Hulu, are you folks listening? They both make amazing shows and I love lots of what they do. How about one of you streaming folks pick this up and run with it?

Unnatural #11

It seems that everything is coming full circle. Leslie decides that she’s had enough and it looks like she’s started an internal conflict with the Albino. I think the death of Pif is what really sent her over that mental ledge and she’s not a scared little girl anymore. It seems that she’s found her inner strength and she’s going to need it if she’s going after the Albino.

Carol has escaped into the hallways of where she’s being held and she’s found Khal’s little sister. She bursts into the classroom and helps to inspire the youngsters into rising up against the evil overseer. Carol takes Shea with her, but she eventually runs into Maxime. Maxime does the typical villain thing (which I like) and monologues about her past with Carol. We finally see how Carol gets her scars and we learn that she was one of the cult folks that wanted to control society. We see a good deal of Maxime’s journey to become a shaman and prepare herself to take the Albino’s power from Leslie.

After the monologue, we believe Maxime has fired her gun at Carol, but Leslie has come up behind Maxime and stopped the bullet from even leaving the gun – and with her bare hand! It appears that Leslie has gained control over the Albino, and it doesn’t look like she’s all too happy to see her mother.

With the next issue being the final one, what’s Leslie going to do? Is she going to kill her mother? How will they stop the government from enforcing those ridiculous laws? Maybe taking out Maxime will solve that – since she’s behind the the ones pulling those strings. What’s going to happen to all the detained folks and to the resistance folks like Carol? How is all of this going to be wrapped up in one final issue?! I have complete faith in Mirka Andolfo to complete the story. If she leaves it open for a secondary series, I’m fine with that too.

Conclusion

I’m a little sad that Unnatural is coming to an end, but we knew from the beginning that it was only going to be 12 issues. I haven’t found any definitive information about whether or not Outer Darkness is going to be an ongoing title or limited/mini series. I want Outer Darkness to keep going for as long as John Layman and Afu Chan want to keep it going. They are a powerhouse team and I am totally in love with this book. There are lots of books that I really like, but Outer Darkness has been the book that I am most anxious to get my hands on each month. Grumble and Unnatural come in at a close second, just behind Outer Darkness.

Star Trek: Year Five #3

I absolutely love when a writer includes specific things from the shows and movies in their work. I love it even more when we see what’s happened to one of the many worlds that were visited or in this case, changed, by the presence of the Federation. A Piece of the Action is an episode in season two of TOS. McCoy left his communicator behind, and the repercussions are never revealed in any of the shows (as far as I can remember). It’s one of the many times that viewers are left wondering and imagining what may have happened to the civilization. I always assumed that nothing came of it, since it wasn’t explored later or in other series.

This issue explains what’s happened to the inhabitants of Sigma Iotia II after they dissected and studied McCoy’s communicator. The civilization quickly changed and adapted to a heavy democracy where the processes are greatly exaggerated and even shortened. A president’s term is a week long unlike our current four year term and there is a designated section of the city for election propaganda. It seems like the Prime Directive breach has bettered the whole of the society, until we find out about the Astro-Liberation party. There’s always someone that wants to destroy civility and decency – or so it seems. Spock is taken as a voluntary hostage by Krako and his Astro-Liberation party and is enlightened to some things that are going on behind the scenes. Ever the logical being, Spock decides he should represent the Astro-Liberation party in the election – because that makes the most sense, right? Well, I see lots of complications ahead!

There are a couple of side stories going on in addition to the main story. Uhura has come to the defense of the Tholian that Scotty and his engineering crew have moved to engineering. One of the crew has fallen victim to the old adage, ‘fear what you don’t understand’, and he is trying to dispose of the Tholian. Uhura is the definition of calm, while her fellow crewman is the exact opposite. She’s also a fierce force for what she believes to be right. She’s trying to convince him to stand down when Scotty steps in. Scotty’s attempts don’t yield any results either and the two sides are facing off with the Tholian in the background. In one panel, the Tholian was standing and in the next panel, the poor thing looks like a stunned spider on its back and legs curling inward. There’s nothing to indicate that it was shot or otherwise injured, so what happened?!

Kirk is also dealing with the news that Carol will not allow him to be a part of his son’s life. He’s not taking it well when he opens up to McCoy about it, he expresses everything that was obvious to us – he’s Captain Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Who is he if he’s not the captain of a starship? Who is he outside of Starfleet? Not even he knows. That’s something that follows Kirk throughout all of his life. He always has to have that one last adventure, all the way up to his death in Generations.

Once again, I am not disappointed with my Star Trek comic. I always look forward to getting any Trek comics in my subscription box.

Sea of Stars #1

This story is definitely interesting. It starts off with a young boy, maybe around age eight (plus or minus a year), riding along with his space trucker father on a delivery. It seems like the two have a strained relationship and Gil is trying to be a father to his son, Kadyn, while also trying to do his job. It doesn’t appear that Kadyn’s mother is around. Kadyn mentions that he lost his mom, but that could mean dead or missing. This wouldn’t be a story without something crazy happening. There is a giant space leviathan thing that comes straight for Gil’s ship and chomps down on it. Luckily, Gil and Kadyn are both in spacesuits. The ship is demolished and Kadyn is starring into the eye of the giant monstrosity. Gil boosters his way directly at the monster’s eye with a sharp object and it turns its attention on him, chomping down on him next. Kadyn, who was slowly drifting away, is flailing in an attempt to escape the creature. His hand brushes against an artifact and there’s some unexplained flash of light. When Kadyn starts to wake up, there are two strange creatures, one that looks like a monkey and the other that looks like a whale, discussing how to go about eating him. He can understand them, which is unusual and what’s more unusual is that he can navigate himself through space unaided – and apparently without a functioning space suit. The last few pages show us what became of Gil. He survived! He likely hadn’t been digested enough before Kadyn’s flash of energy-light disintegrated the creature’s face off. His resolve is to find Kadyn, but there is a new threat approaching from the darkness.

This is an entertaining story with action as well as strange creatures that look like they leapt from the very depths of imagination. I really lost myself in the story and in the art, which complement each other nicely. When I was reading this issue, I was so engrossed in the story that I was actually upset when I came to the last page and there was no more. Now I have to wait a whole month before I find out what’s going to happen next, but I’m patient and I can wait. But that speaks volumes about the book and how great this first issue was.

I bet Kadyn is going to transcend his human self and become one with space. Just kidding – but seriously, the kid seems to be more than human now. I wonder if Gil got some of that power as well or if he’s still just a human? Will Kadyn return to being a normal human? Was he a normal human to begin with or something more? What about those creatures that found Kadyn – are they friends or foes? Is that monkey looking one the same thing as those shadowy creatures that Gil’s run into? Sooooo many questions and more keep coming to mind! I’m so excited for the next issue!

Section Zero #4

This issue did not disappoint me at all. I like that there has been a time-jump. I kind of didn’t want to see Tina rescued right away. I like seeing Thom grown up a little and still part of the team. I caught the image of the Star Trek Delta that’s not really a Star Trek Delta on his shirt. He also makes a crack about ‘phasers on stun’ when all the shooting starts. There’s also a TMNT reference with four of the changelings jumping into the fray with the same weapons the turtles use and yelling ‘Cowabungle!’ – which Thom corrected. I’m certain there are plenty of other pop culture references that I missed because I’m not as familiar with them.

I thought the Selkie was an interesting addition to the story and I wonder if they’re going to officially add her to the team as a reformed villain type or if they’ll send her off to be dealt with by the Fairy Courts. I guess she could ‘escape’ from them if she were to also agree to stop being so nasty. Either way, I like Munro and would like to see her around the story in any capacity. I also thought it was clever to make her fancy fur coat into her Selkie coat.

I do not trust Curio – not at all. She’s obviously the chaotic party in all of this and will do as she pleases. I think she’s the reason Thom has that cursed bug tattoo and I think she did it for a reason – the bug bank!

So Carlos has Sam’s sword. He also knows his way around the Sargasso Sea wreckage, which he seems to have a connection to. I think Curio had something to do with all of this. I think there was some kind of manipulation and Carlos ended up doing something awful. Also – OMG! Sam?! What happened?! I bet Curio had something to do with it too! Everything is Curio’s doing! This book is defintiely turning out to be better than I expected when I first picked it up. It’s almost like a ragtag group of superheroes meets the X-Files and Supernatural. There is a lot going on and so much deeper story than just what we’re reading.

Space Bandits #1

I wasn’t completely sure if I was going to like this book. I saw it in the Previews and loved the 80’s style art, and it sounded like science-fantasy, so I decided to give it a shot. Once again, I’ve been impressed by a title that isn’t from Marvel or DC. The art is absolutely amazing and the story is stellar so far. I love Cody – she’s such a naïve yet brilliant criminal. Thena is also naïve, but she’s got some brawn hiding under that delicate looking physique. I foresee a bonding between these two on the horizon. Putting two scorned women together just spells disaster for the entire galaxy!

Thena was scorned by a lover, who anyone could tell that he was about to ditch her on that ‘one last job’ that he wanted to do. I mean, that’s how it always happens! He totally left her holding the bag and she was sent to a really nasty prison, the Crustacean.

Cody was double crossed by the baddest bandits in the galaxy. When you’ve done the job and stolen all the loots, you should expect there to be a double cross. It’s just going to happen when your gang isn’t loyal to you. They were in it for the loot and that was it. When the opportunity presented itself for them to profit a little more, they took it.

Both of these ladies had a predictable outcome to their beginnings. Even though it was predictable, it was a fun and entertaining read. There was a weird satisfying feeling that came over me when it all played out the way I predicted. I know these two are going to team up – but what’s going to happen when they do? Are they going to escape the Crustacean, or get that free pass? Are they going to double cross each other? Are they going to get revenge on those that scorned them? Are they just going to run away together and live on a beach somewhere? So many possibilities and I can’t wait to see what happens with this story.

Conclusion

It’s a glorious day when you have several comics in your subscription box and they all turn out to be great reads! I was pleasantly surprised by Space Bandits. I enjoyed Sea of Stars more than I thought I would. Star Trek is always great! And of course, Section Zero had another awesome issue. I can’t wait for the upcoming issues for all of these books. If you’re looking for something different from stereotypical heroes, and something that feels new, all of the Image books this week are ones I would suggest you check out!

I apologize for how late this article is, but I left for Origins on Tuesday, June 11. The comics release on Wednesdays, and it would cost too much to have them over-nighted to me at Origins. I decided to wait until I returned and got some of my Origins content out.

Grumble #7

Eddie kidnaps Jimmy with the help of Tala. I guess Sammy helped some, or at least he kept Joe busy long enough for those two to slip in and get Jimmy out. Sammy agreed to help as long as Eddie signed a contract with him. I find it hard to believe that Eddie actually signed a legit contract with Sammy though. I think Eddie has a ‘get outta Hell free’ card or something of the like up his sleeve. It’s possible Sammy could get killed by the bounty hunters in their attempts at capturing Eddie and Tala and that’ll get Eddie off the hook, supposedly. Those bounty hunters are still on Eddie’s trail and they have cute little spy bot things watching Eddie and Tala. I’m sure next issue will have some bounty hunter action – unless something else pops up!

This issue had lots of action in it: Eddie and Tala’s shenanigans; the FBI busting in on Joe’s operation; Sammy getting beat to the edge of oblivion; and the bounty hunters targeting Eddie and Tala. There’s so much going on, it’s easy to miss the little details in the background. There are hilariously named arcade games in many of the panels with Sammy and Joe. There’s even a prize toy that looks like Homer Simpson. I love the background detail throughout all the issues of Grumble.

I’m surprised that more folks aren’t talking about Grumble. I see a lot of talk about it, but not as much as I’d like. This book is one of the few with a interesting story that’s pretty original. Also, the art is killer!

Star Trek: Q Conflict #5

So, Amanda and the other Q (Q2) are keeping an eye on Q. I thought they were either doing that or Q was acting on their orders. It seems that the Q Continuum agreed with Q and went to war with the other god-like beings, in an attempt to put them in their place. But it looks like Q had other plans and so now the Continuum is watching Q and plans to shut him down if he oversteps too far.

But it’s Trelane that continues to prove how much of a child he is – much more than the other all mighty beings. He even mentions his parents (major kudos to the writers on that reference to the TOS episode). He wants a Borg Queen in his menagerie, just to say he had one for a while. Three of the four captains were outspoken against this challenge, and then Kirk speaks up. Many folks forget that Kirk never saw the Borg. I don’t know if the writers intended that moment to be as funny as I took it, but I was practically rolling with laughter.

There is a speech bubble from Picard that says, “And how will we make our way deep into the Delta Quadrant to even find one?” I really wish it was being said by Sisko who’s standing next to Picard. Picard already knows that Q can hurl them into the Delta Quadrant so I don’t feel like he should be the one asking this. But, I suppose he’s being rhetorical.

And – O M G – The Traveler and Wesley! I about fell off the couch when I saw Wesley pop out of the shadows. I kept saying, “Please be the Traveler, please be the Traveler.” Because that would have been the best possible thing to happen. It was never really explained, not in decent detail, as to what happened to Wes and the Traveler after Wes left with him in TNG. I was so excited to see them both! The Traveler will likely help Q2 and Amanda sort all of this out. I was trying to figure out how this was all going to end, and when Q poked the Prophets, I thought it would have something to do with them. And it may still involve them in the conclusion, but I have no clue how this will all sort itself out and I am on the edge of seat waiting for the next issue!

Outer Darkness #7

I love this book so much. How is this book not more popular? It should be on the top sellers list. The story is amazing and has complimentary art. There are ghosts, demons, and exorcists… in space. The ship has a captain that’s hated by most of the crew, who all likely want him dead or to have the honor of killing him themselves. There are backstabbers, deceivers, and all kinds of things going on. The ship is powered by a GOD in a tank! They feed it living things to power it up. They bring people back from the dead by retrieving their souls and building them a replacement body. This world is rich with background and stories. The characters are deep with personalities and quirks all their own. The plots and events are well thought out and leave you wanting more, anxious to get that next issue.

What’s wrong with all you folks who aren’t reading this?! I don’t usually get all worked up over folks not reading a particular title, but this one is so good! It’s unique and different in a world of reused ideas and rewritten or rebooted characters and stories.

The crew of the Charon encountered a ghost house in this issue. You read that right – a GHOST HOUSE from Earth – in the middle of space. There is a deep story behind that house that could easily be a movie on its own. They even rescued a nun who had been trapped in the house since 1942. I hope she likes the 28th century. It’s almost like every issue is a round in a game of Russian Roulette. You never know when it’s going to go off or who it’ll hit. I’m just waiting for the issue where Rigg bites it. I feel like it’ll happen, but how and who gets to off him? Will Satalis get that honor? Maybe Agwe, who doesn’t act like he wants Rigg dead, but would probably open that door the very second opportunity knocks. But those folks will all have to survive the onslaught of crazy to get their chance. And who know? Maybe Rigg will be the sole survivor when this is all said and done.

Go buy the trade and start reading this title. I demand it.

Sector Zero #2

I got my copy of this issue and #3 late.

Sector Zero really scratches that 90’s itch for me. If you want to read a ‘new’ 90’s book, this is the title to grab. I like the characters in this book and the story is beginning to fall into place. The first issue was like an ‘origin story’ type book, except it’s for a group of folks that already have a history. We’re picking up with this group after things have fallen apart and been hastily duck taped back together. They picked up a new team member, Thom, last issue and he’s starting to fit in. He gets along well with Tesla, the alien. Sam seems like the reckless and brutish type, while Tina is the delicate and methodical type. I like those dynamics and they show those sides very clearly in this issue.

So the team has discovered a dried up, mummified merman… thing. Turns out, he was part of the team back in the 60’s and 70’s, which they discover after he re-hydrates himself. He meanders off and the team discovers a saber-tooth tiger wandering the desert. There’s a tussle with the tiger and it vanishes through a ring of fire, pulling Tina with it. The team decides to follow the only clue they have, from Sargasso the merman thing, which he provides when they return to base. Sam does the ‘hero’ thing and rushes off on his own.

We then get a flashback from Sam. The flashback is of his honeymoon with Tina which ends with her stepping on a landmine and him trying to save her. We know she lives, but she was saying something about her legs. Is she partially robotic? Did they restore her legs? I want to know what happened! After the flashback, we see Tina in a prehistoric world with a dwindling ring of fire in the grass around her.

There is a lot going on in the pasts of these characters and I definitely want to know more. But I also want to see where they go from here! Sector Zero is a super fun read. It has an X-Files and Supernatural vibe to it, which I thoroughly enjoy!

Sector Zero #3

I’m actually really surprised at how much I enjoy this book. I knew I’d like it, but I find it hard to put the book down until I’ve finished it. I read really slow, so it takes me a little bit to read a whole comic. I usually have to put it down, grab a refill on my tea, grab a snack, or take a restroom break part way through it – but not this book. The more I read, the more I like it. It’s getting very close to the point of me loving the book.

This issue shows us some of Sam’s dark side dealings and the lengths he’ll go for Tina. We also see Tesla get taken out of commission for most of the book, and it’s a good thing. If Tesla was up and conscience, there wouldn’t have been much excitement. That alien has the most incredible power. I’m sort of scared of what Tesla might be capable of. I’m liking Sargasso the more I see him. He’s a big brutish merman thing, but he’s got a dry sense of humor. I find that to be hilarious! Thom looks like he might be finding himself a little more and getting more comfortable being the bug.

And why am I not surprised that there is a cannibal Rat King in the sewers? And is Sam actually going to eat him?! I think he might continue to beat him until he gets the info he wants… but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sam took a huge bite out of him.

Unnatural #10

Color me, shocked!

Okay, before we get to that, we get more background with Leslie’s mother, Maxime. I love it. I wanted more and I got more – and still want more! Maxime is just selfish and insane, and I love her as a big baddie. I feel bad for Leslie, when she eventually learns that her mother is Glance. I bet she’s going to lose it and probably kill her own mother – or the Albino will do it. Carol is still being tortured by Maxime’s lackeys too. She’s going through some pretty intrusive events and she’s keeping it together pretty well. I have faith in her, even though I’m sure the other lackeys will catch her before she actually escapes, I think she’ll give them enough trouble to slow up Maxime’s plans just enough.

And I knew Leslie wasn’t dead at the end of the last issue. But the Albino definitely has more control than he should have. Leslie is trying so hard to keep him caged, but I don’t think she’s strong enough. Unless the death of her pet gives her the strength she needs. I couldn’t believe it – when Pif attacked Khal and Khal instinctively defended himself, he killed the pitiful little thing. I was floored! I didn’t expect that at all and that’s all we’re left with in that final panel is a dead dino pet. Shocked… utterly shocked. I just don’t know what to think. I expected Khal or Saya to die… not Pif.

Absolutely stellar book – writing and art both. The story is fantastic and keeps me guessing and even shocks me still, ten issues in!

Conclusion

Wow. What a week of books! And all of these were waiting for me when I got back from Origins. I wish I could have taken them with me, but I left a day too early for that. I couldn’t have asked for a better batch of books to read – quality and quantity!

Marvel
Doctor Strange #11

I liked the story and I liked how Doctor Strange was able to find a way to inadvertently defeat Dormammu, for the time being. I like how his estranged friends came together and did what needed to be done. He put his faith in them and they put enough faith in him to get their part of the job done. Zelma is now running around with the Ancient One, which is kind of cool. I also really like that Kanna didn’t just instantly accept him back. When someone wrongs you, it’s okay to require a repentance period. I just hope that she doesn’t make him wait too long because that could do more harm than good to their friendship. I’m unclear as to where Wong is off to. I assume he’s headed back to where he was living prior to all this mess, or he may travel with the Ancient One. It wasn’t really clear in the story.

There is something bothering me about this issue – a lot. Where is Bats?! Mr. Waid… do you understand how much my feelings will be hurt if you write him out?! I understand if you have him cross over or something, but don’t just abandon him into the ether…

Grumble #4

This was an action packed issue! Car chases, zappy alien devices, goo people that explode when struck by a car, destruction of public property, murder – what more could anyone ask for?

I was surprised when Eddie reactivated the bounty hunter’s device. I knew that it would eventually reactivate, but I didn’t think Eddie would do it. He plugs a magical charger into it and it powers up. I also have no clue who the goo people are that were chasing Tala and Eddie. They look like faceless alien goo-monks that can fly and shoot beams of magical energy from their hands. One gets run over by Imp’s car and it explodes into a pile of mushier looking goo. And oh boy… Tala blasts one towards the end of the book and it turns into a giant bug-like thing with a toothy hole in it’s face. Absolutely terrifying. Good thing they were able to ‘splortch’ it. There was lots of goo in this issue.

I’m not sure why, but I’m happy Simon killed the Imp. I don’t think I’d have been happy if anyone else had done it. But for every one of Eddie and Tala’s opposition that gets taken out, another one or two pop up. I want a Simon spinoff series, like really bad.

As Tala is driving Eddie in their getaway car throughout this issue, be sure you look at the license plate in each panel. The tags change to match whatever is going on in Tala’s head – or so it appears. I love it! I love the little details like that. From odd things in a office to hilarious street signs, there are small details that enhance every issue of Grumble. You could easily enjoy the book without noticing those details, but it’s so much fun to look for those things too.

I have read enough comics to know that you don’t just take someone’s word at face value. So why was I surprised to see Tala’s mother is alive?! I was literally shocked. I just assumed she was dead, like Tala said. Eddie also showed a little bit of concern for Tala, but I’m not sure if it was genuinely over her safety or because he still needed her to drive the car.

I’ve said this almost every time and I’ll say it again; Rafer Roberts and Mike Norton are a dream team. I want more comics from this team!

Conclusion

I’m very concerned about Bats in Doctor Strange. I don’t like when characters are ignored or just left out. Would it hurt to write him into one panel? I didn’t dislike Doctor Strange this week, I just felt like something was missing – and that was Bats. Thank goodness I had Grumble to make me feel whole again.

Marvel
Doctor Strange #10

This is the 400th issue, which is an anniversary collection. What I love most about this issue is that the first story is a continuation of the ongoing story from the previous issue, as well as a few miscellaneous stories. The stories are: Remittance, House Call, The Lever, and Perchance. There is also a very pretty two page spread of Doctor Strange artwork by Tom Palmer.

Remittance

This is the continuation of the ongoing story. I have to say that I’m somewhat surprised that Dormammu is behind this. I figured Mordo or some other cosmic entity would be the cause of it. Strange’s biggest flaw is his ego paired with with his arrogance. And now look where it has got Earth – under the boots of the Faltine. And it looks like his friends are getting a front row seat to all of the destruction. Strange looks completely defeated in the final panel, and I’m anxious to see how he squirms his way out of this problem. He better suck it up and fix things with his friends too.

I’m happy Bats was mentioned by name and that he appeared in a single panel, but I remain concerned that Waid will write him out. I want to see him stick around.

House Call

This is a short story with a lesson about the right way to handle a bully. It’s almost too short and the story gets a little wonky, but it has a good message behind it.

The Lever

This story is about Strange’s past, when he first came to the Ancient One for help. It includes the lead up to Mordo’s betrayal, and of course, it’s a little different. But, it’s okay to be slightly different, so long as the core of the character remains. Strange has a humbling moment in this story and it’s a shame he doesn’t retain that lesson.

Perchance

This story was at an odd place in the book. The two page spread of art is before this story, and it feels like the conclusion when you come across it. Surprise! There’s another story hidden behind an add for War of the Realms! This story was a fun one about a super scary demonic looking dude who is afraid to sleep because Strange haunts his dreams. That’s a cool concept and I love it.

Overall, this compilation of stories is probably the best compilation I’ve read in any of the super hero comics on my subscription list. They were all fun to read and I’d definitely read this issue again.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 20/20 One-Shot

Twenty years before Picard was captain of the Enterprise-D, he was captain of the Stargazer. He was not exactly the same Picard that we all know and love. He was not as understanding and he worried to much about what others thought. This got him into trouble while on a diplomatic mission. Instead of sending his commander to represent him, he went to the planet’s surface, knowing that there was a very high potential for something bad to happen. Luckily for him, Jack Crusher’s fiance, Beverly Howard was aboard the ship and they were able to send to the planet to save his life. There’s a lovely wedding at the end and Beverly Howard is now Beverly Crusher.

What a wonderful story, with a great message! Folks will respect you more for making the right decisions, than for always trying to be the hero. Put your faith and trust in those who work with you. Also, don’t assume you can handle everything – everyone needs help sometimes and you should never be ashamed to ask for help. This was such a wonderfully written story, but I would expect no less from Peter David. He’s a writer and author that I’ve idolized for a long time and he’s written some really amazing Star Trek content. When you pair his writing with the astounding artwork of J. K. Woodward, you’ve got a truly great work of art.

Star Trek: The Q Conflict #1

This book doesn’t say outright what year it takes place, but I’m going to assume it’s 2379. There is a panel that’s almost midway through the book where Jake and Captain Sisko are shown celebrating Sisko’s promotion to captain and that was in 2371. The panel has a caption that says, “eight years earlier”, which would put the year at 2379 for the Enterprise-E crew.

So, Q and several other beings of phenomenal cosmic power are at odds. The reason is petty, as it always is with ‘evolved’ beings. I mean, when you have everything you could ever need or want at the snap of your fingers, what’s left to cherish? I guess their inflated egos are all they truly have that’s special to them and they feel it’s worth fighting over. We have a truly all-star cast of cosmic entities, most of which are from TOS: Metrons, Trelane, Organians, and Q. Trelane has been noted as a member of the Q Continuum in non-canon novels, but the Continuum is notorious for adding and booting members too. Each of these entities have chosen one of the captains from various series to be their ‘champion’ in this contest. All the captains and crew are plucked from various points in the timeline as well, which makes for an interesting interaction. I’m sure there will be a mind wipe of some kind after this event. I dislike when folks use gimmicks like that in a time travel event, and I hope a different explanation comes up later.

I was initially upset when I saw Worf on the bridge. I had forgotten he was a member of the Enterprise-E crew and I had to do some digging to jog my memory. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched Insurrection and Nemesis. But there is an error with his uniform color. He was in the command division during Insurrection and Nemesis, so why is he in operations in this book? Probably just a minor oversight or maybe something has happened prior to this book that I’m not aware of.

I definitely enjoyed the story and the artwork is good. It was definitely well written and entertaining, and I look forward to the rest of this series and to see how they reconcile the time travel memories.

Conclusion

I picked up Batgirl this week, but after the repeated real world political references, I will be dropping it and it will no longer be featured in my Comic Box Recap articles. Doctor Strange more than made up for the disappointment in Batgirl.

As for the minor continuity errors that have occurred and will continue to occur in the Star Trek comics, they have to be overlooked. As a huge Star Trek fan, I’ve learned that there is no way to keep the entirety of continuity in tact. TOS had continuity errors within it’s three seasons. The Star Trek universe is vast and there are going to be unavoidable errors. As a fan, you can either accept the errors and continue to enjoy new content; or you can be a stickler about it and keep with the same content and never enjoy anything new. I choose to accept the new content, to a certain degree. If you stray too far from the core of the characters, I will choose to not accept it, regardless of any official stance. At my core, I’m a Trekkie and I love Star Trek. I want to enjoy all the content I can, while I can.
