In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. I don’t always read all the comics I order, because I’m only collecting some of them. Others are ones I may have started reading, but lost interest in but I still order them. You never know when you may want to go back and revisit a series at a later date.
Well, my disappointment was overwhelming for this particular issue. It started off fine, with Carol going after Tony. Then it all fell apart when she went into her pocket dimension…
It appears that she’s killing clones of the Avengers. Carol gives her reasoning behind what she’s doing – to save Kree refugees, which is admirable and she’s doing in it in typical Carol fashion. I’m not digging Vox Supreme. I really don’t like the idea that Carol barfed up her new suit – it’s just gross. None of this story is going the way I expected and certainly not he way I like.
I enjoy this book, most of the time. This issue was fine until the very end. I’m not down for a change to their origin story and I may be dropping this book. I thought the whole thing was going to be some weird connection for Johnny, not all of the Fantastic Four.
I like the wholesome messages in the story, but I’m just not down for anything like an adjustment to their origin story. It was totally fine the way it was. I don’t know why they have to change it from an accident to something more… malicious.
I was super excited to pick this up and read it after reading two disappointing books this week. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! There are far too few Voyager comics, and almost no Mirror Universe Voyager content – but that’s because the Terran Empire had almost fallen to the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance. I think the date (non-official canon date) of the Empire’s fall is around 2500 – give or take ten years.
I.S.S. Voyager gets lost in the Delta Quadrant, just like U.S.S. Voyager does in the prime universe. But MU Janeway decided to conquer it as a pirate queen instead of looking for a way home. She’s much harsher and takes literally no smack from anyone. She’s totally bad and I love it! Sign me up! I’ll serve under MU Janeway any day!
I was just as excited for Battlepug as I was the Trek book this week. I love this book so much and this issue was awesome! I will admit, I was a little worried about the whole dimensional portal thing though. I didn’t want like a weird multiverse thing going on, but it appears to just be different worlds rather than different realities. (Please… don’t be different realities – just different worlds…) The giant people are keepers of sorts and Siglund’s actions have had repercussions that a child couldn’t have predicted. I don’t think Missus Queen has any idea what she’s unleashed either. I can’t wait to see how the Kinmundian takes on this challenge!
I also noticed the Star Wars reference, which I thought was absolutely great! The part where Kinmundian is in the ice cave with the giant white hairy creature is a reference to when Luke was upside down in the Wampa cave. The scene is pretty close to the Star Wars scene, until the Kinmundian uses the creature like a hammer to break the ice loose around his feet. I loved it!
I’m still curious about where Sprinkles is going to end up. Will he stay with the Kinmundian or go back to Siglund? I can’t wait for issue #5 – it can’t get here soon enough!
I really hope that Captain Marvel gets back on track after this arc. I wanted Star to be the ‘dark’ Captain Marvel. I want Fantastic Four to get back on track too. I will continue to buy Captain Marvel, regardless of where the story goes but not Fantastic Four. If it doesn’t get back on track in the next issue or two, I’ll cancel my FF sub. Star Trek books are always great reads for me. Battlepug has delivered once again and left me in high anticipation of the next issue!

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. Well, I was thrown for a loop in this issue. I thought Star was going to be the dark Captain Marvel. Guess what – I was WRONG! This issue starts with an epic fight between Carol and Thor, which ultimately ends with Thor’s beheading. We don’t actually see Carol do the deed, so it’s possible that it could be a facade, but there’s no way to really know until we’re told for sure. But something is obviously going on because Carol does NOT want to hurt Thor. But in the end, she delivers Thor’s head to Vox Supreme. If you read Death of the Inhumans, you’d know that the Vox are the next stage of evolution for Inhumans. They were engineered by the Kree to rid their subjects of the humanity in them. The Vox leader is Vox Supreme, who we see here – and he’s terrifying! We know that Carol is part Kree, but because she’s on the side of Humanity, she probably has no ability to control or manage Vox Supreme.
I want to know how this all started. How did he get Carol under his influence? Did she really kill Thor? Is she really going to kill the other Avengers? We know comics like to resurrect characters all the time, so if the Avengers die, are they going to stay dead? Where was Vox Supreme hiding? Is the Kree behind this? So many questions and more keep coming to mind. It’s times like this that I wish I was able to read the entire story in one sitting, but I have to wait for the next issue to release!
Well, I wish there was more to this first issue because I’m not completely sure where this is going. The writing isn’t bad, and it’s a good issue as far as background context goes, but I need more. It’s a tragic story about a kid who’s zombie-like. The cause was from a curse put on his mother while she was pregnant with him, by a woman in New Orleans. His mother died in childbirth and his father hid him from the world. His father died and so he went looking for the woman that cursed his mother. We end with him burning her shop down. So, I’m confused as to where this story is going. I need issue two to be able to make a solid opinion on the story as a whole.
I love the art for the story, and it’s in black and white – not color. I like some stories being done in black and white, like this one. I think the decision to not do color was a good one for this title.
This story was good. It wasn’t amazing or great, but it was a good filler story for the gap after season two. It gives us the events that led Spock to his decision for returning to Starfleet and it also shows us more of L’rell’s resolve and her love for the Klingon Empire. She will do what it takes to protect the Empire, even if it means she has to destroy her own ship.
The Shadows of Kahless seem like a group of radicals and homegrown terrorists. I wonder if they’re going to show up anymore in future Star Trek content? If you like seeing additional story material, this series is a good one to read.
WOAH!!! I thought the crew was DEAD! I had no clue that it was a hallucination. Well played, Mr. Layman. Did Afu Chan know they weren’t dead when he did the art for issue 11? If he did, he didn’t put any indicators in the art for that previous issue. I was also convinced Admiral Prakash was dead too. Surprise! He’s not! My heart can’t take this! Admiral Prakash kind of planned on Rigg pulling these shenanigans. He didn’t plan on his daughter staying on the Charon though so there’s a wrench thrown into his plan now, whatever that plan may be. I think it’s something to do with bringing Rochelle back. This should be a wild ride in season two!
We still have a pregnant, time-displaced nun hiding on the ship, and Satalis with his own ship now en-route to catch the Charon. I’m so excited to see what happens with all of this! Everything I thought I knew is a lie! Rigg isn’t as cold and cruel as I thought he was – because he didn’t actually murder a bunch of folks.
I want to see this as a TV series… someone please make this. This is too good to not be a series!
I enjoyed all the books this week, and even had an additional book – David. I picked that book up at the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention on November 16, so I worked it into this week’s recap. That weekend was the release of David. I wasn’t disappointed with any of the books this week. Outer Darkness is the gem of the bunch with Captain Marvel shining almost as bright.

Haha! I knew someone was going to tear into the Nobody’s Ponies! I wasn’t sure if Sasha, Bryony, or both of them were going to do it, but I knew someone would! Sasha let her guard down though and almost got Ladora killed by… Dankmeme. Okay… These names are absolutely hilarious: Dankmeme, Slamprancer, Sugarspit. I love them!
But back to the story – Ladora is saved by Bryony, who has lost her cool, completely. This little girl almost murdered a herd of the baddest horses around. If not for Sasha’s cool head and quick thinking, Bryony would have totally splattered those horses. But that’s what they get. Bryony totally turns them into her little horsies and they all ride off towards the north after the Kinmundian. I’m totally happy with the outcome of that encounter.
As for the Kinmundian, I’m not sure if he’s actually killed Jofel this time or not. That guy keeps popping up like a cowlick. Just when you think you’ve gotten a handle on it, it springs back up. Jofel is just like that. But it’s safe to say that those elves are probably dead. He also let his guard down in the fight with the Queen of the Northland Elves. She stabbed him and he’s bleeding out (again) in the snow.
The Queen mentioned another realm. So, does this mean that Battlepug officially has a multiverse now? I knew there was something up with that giant spinning portal of death. And Sprinkles (Modi) isn’t from the Kinmundian’s world?!!?! This changes everything! The Kinmundian is a Claw Mage and so was Catwulf, but Sprinkles didn’t obey Catwulf. Was Sprinkles following the Kinmundian because of friendship? What’s going to happen now that Sprinkles is back with his owner? Will Sprinkles just forget about the Kinmundian?
I also want to say that the story Kelly Williams did at the end of this issue made me so very sad. It was good, but sad.
I’m so happy that the Zzazteks captured Gil and didn’t kill him. Gil’s helmet, which has the security robot’s personality in it, hasn’t fully grasped the concept of loss and grief. Gil had given up because he thought he had lost Kadyn. Gil didn’t have the will or desire to continue on, until he realized that Kadyn was very possibly nearby. And then we see Gil acting like himself again, so it’s a good thing the Zzazteks didn’t kill him. He helps the monkey and the whale without knowing that they’re Kadyn’s friends. They try to escape and happen to run into Kadyn and all the crazy stuff that’s happening with him. I was happy with how that all played out because it made sense and the story flowed nicely.
We all knew what the Zzazteks were going to do to Kadyn in order to get the magic club out of him. But what I didn’t see coming was Dalla trying to stop it from happening. She was pretty set on getting her place back in society and Kadyn had to die for that to happen. And I was completely blindsided by the ‘most exalted star shaman’ and his betrayal. He always acted like a jerk, so I really didn’t think anything of it until the panel after he slashed Kadyn and proclaimed the power of the war club was his. It was that moment that I gasped and realized he was a super bad dude, not just a bad dude.
Now there’s a giant monster hovering above the Zzaztek’s temple thing and Kadyn’s giving off light like a glow stick. Gil’s probably going to kill that shaman or get killed – or both. Kadyn will have to save the Zzazteks and their moon, and will probably become an exalted hero. But will Gil survive? Will Kadyn survive? Will they make it home to Earth? What’s going to happen to Dalla, monkey, and whale?
I love both of these books. Sea of Stars has a bit more fantasy than what I originally had hoped, but it’s turned out to be an excellent read. I like fantasy, but I’m more of a sci-fi person and I’m very picky when it comes to the fantasy I read. Battlepug is a great example of the type of fantasy content I like. I like it over the top, crazy, awesome, epic, and fun.

I want to welcome you to my Retro Recap series! In this series, I will review and recap some of the older comics and novels I’ve recently read. These books might be a year old, or several decades old. Just because something isn’t the newest thing on the shelf doesn’t make it any less entertaining or enjoyable.
For this installment of Retro Recap, I want to shine the spotlight on a comic series called Mek Corps by Larry Cathey of Heycat Comics. You can find copies of Mek Corps, here.

I want to get this out of the way first. I’m super critical of Marvel and DC for errors in their books. They’re large enough companies with lots of folks on their payroll that someone should catch errors before the book is printed. I’m much more forgiving with fellow bloggers (because I make plenty of errors too) and independent self-publishers. I didn’t see an editor listed in any of the issues, so I assume that Mr. Cathey is doing all of the writing, editing, letters, and art on his own or with the help of family and friends. I’m not sure if folks understand how much work that is for one person. Even with help from family and friends, there will likely be at least one error on occasion.
That being said, I only noticed one, maybe two typos, for all four issues. I also noticed one small potential error in the art in one panel where Lord Dysan looks to be missing a lower part of his head piece. None of these are a big deal and they don’t diminish the work that’s been done on these books – I just want any of you potential readers to be forgiving if you find errors. This is a huge undertaking for one person and I appreciate the work Mr. Cathey has put into this series.
Mek Corps has a lot of science fiction elements to it that reminds me of sci-fi pulp, but with a modern flare. I’m a sucker for sci-fi, and even more so for sci-fi pulp. The pulp era of science fiction (1930s-1950s) has lots of outrageous designs and ideas that we now know are not likely or probable, but they’re still fun. A lot of the science in Mek Corps sounds like obvious fiction, just like pulp science sounds if you read it today. That is one of the things that I absolutely love about this story!
But there’s more to it than the sci-fi pulp feel. Mek Corps is more of a modern sci-fi pulp super hero story. The Mek Corps are a team of folks that are enhanced or have superior abilities that set out to take down the evil of their world. And that’s how I describe it to folks too; Avengers or Justice League mingled with science fiction and a touch of pulp. And I’m not sure, but there might be the slightest hint of Cthulhu in there too. But that could still be something science related, like a portal of some kind and not magic.
The art style has a very retro feel to it as well. I really appreciate the classic 80s-90s style that Mr. Cathey has and I think that helps amplify the retro feel of Mek Corps. I’m such a sucker for 80s and 90s comics and when that’s paired that with the sci-fi pulp feel of the story, I’m completely drawn in.
I’m going to say this with the nicest of intentions – this comic could easily be a novel. There is a wealth of information in the first few pages of issue one and two. I don’t mind a deluge of information in a few issues, so long as it’s pertinent. The backstory that’s being told could have easily been expanded on into a prequel to Mek Corps, but I think it was done tastefully and appropriately. It is indeed relevant to what’s going on and the content might matter in future issues. There’s so much information there and I hope we don’t run into a recap scenario with Nether. We came close, but Mr. Cathey handled it well and didn’t bog down the story with an unnecessary recap. We briefly see Nether’s journey and perspective, which is absolutely fine.
Hell Hunter is a mini-story about a guy named Jay who has stumbled into something ‘mystical’ that may or may not be tied to Dysan. I like that this isn’t part of the main story, but I really want to know how this is all tied in to it. I hope it’s not magic, but I’ll go along for the ride if it is. Magic is just science we don’t understand, right?
When I read a book that focuses on several characters, like a team, I usually have a favorite almost immediately. I’ve read all four of the issues that are currently released and every time I think I like a character, my mind changes. I broke the Mek Corps into two groups of who I like the most. I like all the characters equally in each group, but I like the group one characters more than characters in group two.
Group 1: Circuits, Carbon, and Synth.
Group 2: Hammer, Lydia, Brad (Mektro), Ion, and Goldfish.
As far as the ‘bad guys’ go, Torrent is pretty awesome but I really like Shard too. We don’t know enough about Crosshair, Surge, or Mange yet. Lord Dysan and Madame Ionate are classic villainous masterminds… or are they? I’m really interested to see which way Madame Ionate goes with the information she has about Mektro. Will she turn to the side of good or try to corrupt him?
I feel like each character is well thought out and they all have a distinct personality – though they all seem to have an occasional witty streak. You can read more about some of the characters, here.
I like a lot of current comics, but they often feel like they’re based more in fantasy than science fiction. I don’t get that from Mek Corps because of the sci-fi pulp feel I get from it. If you think you would like a well thought out science fiction story about a super hero team fighting super villains, then Mek Corps is a comic series that highly recommend you look into to.
Not everyone will find the story or art of Mek Corps appealing. If you’re not into it, that’s totally fine. I don’t allow hateful remarks, but constructive criticism is always welcome – just be kind. I hope that others find Mek Corps as entertaining as I did and I look forward to future issues!

My first thought when I saw the giant portal was, “Oh no. Please don’t be time travel.” I have no clue why I thought that and I’m certain that’s not what it is. I have no clue what the spiraling death lights are yet and it’s not revealed in this issue. We find out what happened to Battlepug though! If you didn’t read the first volume of Battlepug (you can – it’s in the Compugdium), then you probably don’t know who the giant boy is. That’s Siglund of the Iceborne Mountains, unless I’ve missed something. We never actually see Sig’s face until now, so I guess it’s possible that it could be another giant boy posing as Sig. But Battlepug (a.k.a. Modi, Sprinkles), seems to go willingly with him. The look of heartbreak on the Kinmundian’s face as Battlepug walks away is so sad! I felt awful for him. The Yuletide warrior woman is the Queen of the Northland Elves, and it’s pretty obvious that she called Sig there to collect Battlepug.
Sasha, Moll, Bryony, Ladora, Colfax, and Mingo went to see Callistus – to get the gang back together and go after the Kinmundian. Callistus has put together a food processing business making hamballs, which I guess I meatballs of sorts. He’s made an honest living and turned the town around! But he jumps at the chance to leave, which didn’t surprise me at all. They bump into a gang of hoodlums, and I about died when I saw them. They’re a bunch of horses with bad boy tattoos on their hind quarters. I love it! I’m a My Little Pony fan and I love MLP spoofs. This one didn’t disappoint. One of them flat out kicked Bryony into next week! Those MLP rejects have no clue what they’ve done. Bryony is going to destroy them for breaking her heart and possibly some of her bones. Sasha may even take a few hides herself! I can’t wait for issue three!
I was certain that Satalis was a goner. I’m not surprised that Prakash stepped in and stopped Rigg though. And I’ve been curious as to what Agwe and Rigg have been up to for the last few issues and finally – a solid clue! They’re gonna steal a starship.
Rigg set the crew up with an alcohol induced sex party as a reward for surviving under his command. As Rigg and Agwe left the party room, I saw Hydzek approach Prakash about something. I really want to know what Hydzek needed to talk to Prakash about. Meanwhile, the party was a setup for the crew to be murdered while Rigg’s out recruiting a new crew. I’m guessing he’s keeping the new crew to a minimum so they’re easier to control.
I really don’t like Admiral Prakash. Rigg figures out what the job is that he’s supposed to do before he clocks the Admiral with a picture frame and knocks him out. I’m assuming he’s only knocked out and not dead… but you never know! I’m trying to figure out what Rigg’s plan is. I think he wanted to find out what the super secret job was, steal a ship, do the job, and use the results as leverage to get what he wants from the Galactic Service. And I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Satalis, the Crone, Hydzek, or either Prakash.
This was a great week for me from my Image subs! I got to read my absolute favorite Image title – Battlepug; as well as the close second, if not tied for second – Outer Darkness. Don’t ask me to choose my favorite between the two, because I can’t. It would be like comparing and apple to an orange. Both are great comics, but different genres. I wouldn’t want to go without either of them.
I just had a thought hit me – what if – the portal in Battlepug leads to Grumble?! I know, not likely since they’re from two different publishers, but crazier things have happened! I’d love a Battlepug/Grumble crossover!

I stumbled across a comic back in 2015 while browsing the internet for pug related images. The comic showed a precariously censored naked woman, talking to two dogs – one of which was a pug. I read a few panels and decided to hunt down physical copies of the comic book called Battlepug. After a failed search through back issue boxes in the area, I gave up, forgetting all about the pug and the naked lady. I was not aware that it was in a hardcover format at that time and I later discovered that it was originally a webcomic. If I had known about the hardcover books, I would have purchased them years ago, but I thought it was only a webcomic. I don’t usually read digital only comics and books, so I put the naked lady and the pug in the back of mind and moved on.
In 2018, Mike Norton was a guest at the Dyersburg Comic and Pop Culture Convention (renamed to the Dyersburg Comic Expo). I walked by his table and paused, staring at the familiar pug art and the hardcover books on his table. It wasn’t until a few hours later, after digging on Google, that I realized it was that long forgotten series I wanted to read! Soon after his visit to Dyersburg, I purchased the first volume of Battlepug. The Compugdium was announced shortly after and I quickly signed myself up for it.
This is all very riveting, I’m sure, and you’re probably wondering why I’m telling you this. I don’t want someone else to make – or continue making the same mistake I did. I’m still not a fan of digital only material, but I definitely give it more than a passing glance now. The next thing you’re probably asking yourself, ‘Why should I read Battlepug?’ You’re in luck! I can give you ten really good reasons to read the Compugdium and then subscribe to the new Battlepug comic!
Ten reasons (in no particular order) for why you shouldn’t just read the Compugdium and the Battlepug comics, but why you should purchase copies as well:
Reason #10
Ordering things from your local comic book store helps the store, especially if you’re already interested in the title. That’s a good enough reason on it’s own.
Reason #9
You can get the creators to sign them! You can’t do that with a digital copy. I’m sure there are some folks that don’t care about having signed copies of anything, but for those of us that treasure those items, it’s a pretty good reason to own copies.
Reason #8
It’s fun having the giant Compugdium on the coffee table as a conversation starter.
Guest: “So, read any good books lately?”
Me: Gestures with both hands at the Compugdium.
Silly reason aside, it’s much easier on the eyes to read a hard copy than to sit and scroll through the website. Not that there’s anything wrong with the site, it’s just more convenient – at least I think.
Reason #7
The story is familiar, yet different. It’s definitely what you would expect from a fantasy type story about a barbarian determined to exact vengeance upon an evil villain. It’s familiar enough to draw you in, and different enough to keep you reading. The major characters are all memorable, entertaining, and fun.
Reason #6
Reason #5 leads right into this one. The writing is well done and the content isn’t too bad for young adults. A lot of times, I get lost in fantasy stories because they can over explain the world or character histories. This one is pretty straight forward and flows well from chapter to chapter. There’s sometimes a lot of adult content in fantasy books too, especially with murder and other adult topics. This book has murdering, but it’s not super gross. If I remember correctly, the most obscene things in the Compugdium are the toad boobies and conveniently censored seers. Moll stays mostly covered except for some side-boob shots and her bare butt, but she’s censored with the environment like the other seers. But honestly, I’ve seen must worse on prime-time TV.
Reason #5
The art is great! Norton’s style of art fits so well with the content of the story and Passalaqua is a great colorist. Crank! does a great job on the lettering as well. I love the style used for the letters because it fits the genre perfectly. It all just falls perfectly into place.
Reason #4
Bryony is a great reason to read this story. She’s the foul mouthed child that the Kinmundian saves from some kidnappers sent by Catwulf. She’s a really cool mage of the root, so she controls plants and such. She’s also totally unfiltered, but is censored – kind of. If you look close enough, you can see what she’s saying. I love the censor bars though!
Reason #3
Sasha is another reason you should read this story. She’s a full figured warrior lady that makes Red Sonja look like an amatuer. Sasha goes through some really rough patches in throughout the story too. She’s lost more, changed more, and overcome more than anyone other than the Kinmundian – and even that’s arguable. Sasha is my second favorite character in the whole series; second only to Battlepug.
Reason #2
There’s a giant PUG! I love pugs! Pugs are one of my favorite dogs and Sprinkles… I mean Battlepug, is just amazing! Can you tell how much I love Battlepug by all the exclamation marks I’m using!!! Seriously though, Battlepug is adorable and a warrior. You can’t get much better than that. Not to mention, he resisted Catwulf’s magic and chomped him. I love that pug.
Reason #1
There’s a magic using barbarian that rides a giant pug – what else could you need or want? If you like the idea of Conan the Barbarian, the Comedy, then this is definitely the book for you! I love fantasy barbarians and I love pugs… why not both? And the Kinmundian killed his slaver, the King of the Northland Elves (basically medieval evil Santa). The Kinmundian and Battlepug have a special bond; ‘a boy and his dog’ type of thing. And as much as he tries to resist it, he can’t.
Now you know why you should buy it, but what did I think of Battlepug #1 – the new series that just released?
Battlepug has returned! The Kinmundian is back on the path of revenge. But before that happens, he was venturing with Moll, Colfax, and Mingo when they came to a town that’s been taken over by an evil puppet controlled by a dictator. The Kinmundian handily disarmed the dictator – after he transformed into a bear-man… thing. Battlepug tossed the dictator miles away. I loved this whole battle scene. Was it a battle though? Jofel, the dictator, was so easily beaten that it almost didn’t seem fair. But it’s not fair to the common folk for someone to just walk up an assume a leadership role without being fairly chosen by the masses.
After the battle, Bryony showed off a new trick she picked up by talking to the Kinmundian and Moll through a flower mural she sprouted in the middle of town. She’s living with Sasha in Leamhan, where they’ve been rebuilding. I love what Bryony’s done with the place! She’s as cute and foulmouthed as ever. And Sasha is amazing! I love the armor on her and I guess it’s a good thing she has it – or she could die really easy. I’m so happy to see Sasha in this new series and I hope she eventually joins the Kinmundian on his journey.
Speaking of – the Kinmundian set out on his own to confront the King of the Northland Elves and along the way, hand-less Jofel and his goons attempted to ambush him. They’re stopped by a yuletide themed warrior woman who claims him as her bounty, but offers to let them help her. My speculation on who she is – the daughter or wife of the King of the Northland Elves. Or, she could be his best and most devoted warrior, set out to avenge the death of her master. Or none of those… Can’t wait to find out!

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. I don’t always read all the comics I order, because I’m only collecting some of them. Others are ones I may have started reading, but lost interest in but I still order them. You never know when you may want to go back and revisit a series at a later date.
BATS!!! Bats is in this issue – and for more than a brief cameo! He actually has a conversation with Strange! I was shocked, but extremely happy. Now, I’m not silly enough to think that Mark Waid has read anything I’ve written about Bats – the man has probably never heard my name, and I doubt he’d care what I had to say anyway. But my faith in Waid has been restored – not that he needs my faith. Let’s see if he keeps my favorite secondary character in the pages of Doctor Strange.
I definitely enjoyed this issue, and would have even if Bats weren’t in it, but his presence elevated my enjoyment. I think Strange needs Bats, not only as a sounding board but also as a voice of reason at times. Bats brings up the dilemma that a friend and I were discussing: If Strange is in the middle of surgery, what does he do if there’s an invasion or attack from a being that only he can deal with? Strange doesn’t answer well enough for me. He brags about his ability and says, “And if I still can… …how can I not?” That ego of his was showing!
I can’t express how happy I was to see Kanna back again as well. She’s my next favorite secondary character, after Bats. She definitely brings out something in Strange’s personality when she’s around him. Her skills as a technomancer are also really handy. I really hope we see more of her (and Bats) in future issues.
I say this all the time, but I honestly mean it and can’t stress this enough – this is the perfect family friendly book. This is a book I would recommend reading to younger children and I really don’t think the Fantastic Four gets the love they deserve.
I really loved how this issue was written because it was different and interesting. It was written from the perspective of the aliens on an alien planet that the Fantastic Four ‘invaded’. Now, we all know that they weren’t invaders and one of the aliens probably misinterpreted an ancient prophecy or text. The Unparalleled are a group of heroes, like the Avengers, that intercept any threat to their planet with the help of the Overseer. There’s a bit of fighting and you can tell the Fantastic Four are holding back and trying to communicate, but you can’t read what they’re saying. Some of it looks like it could be deciphered, but I don’t have that kind of patience. Thank you, Reed Richards, for fixing the universal translator. During the fighting, Ben was booted into what they call Lowtown where he encounters hostile folks. Johnny is knocked out and taken away by Sky. The scuffle between Sue and Reed and the Unparalleled ends and they’re taken to the Overseer who tells them that they’re staying there, forever.
I don’t know how much I trust this Overseer guy. He sees everything and I’d expect no less from someone with a name like Overseer. Telling the Unparalleled where the danger is isn’t his only duty – he apparently can tell folks who their soulmates are. Normally that wouldn’t stand out to me, but during the story, I was under the impression that Citadel and Sky were soulmates… until the last page. Sky tells Johnny that they’re soulmates. Are they actually soulmates or is she just crazy? And I know the Fantastic Four won’t stay on Spyre but I’m anxious to see how they get out of there. I think the Overseer is a crazy dictator person disguised as a sane caretaker of sorts. I guess we’ll see in the issues to come!
Dalla is a crazy person and not very nice. She wants to kill Kadyn’s friends, the monkey and whale. She’ll kill Kadyn too if she feels like she has to and take that artifact from inside him. I knew I didn’t like her! She’s not a ‘bad guy’ in the classic sense, just misguided. I highly doubt the Zzazteks will accept her back even if she brings Kadyn to them. They might just kill them all. Her bird is just as crazy as she is. I guess we’ll have to wait until next issue to see how all this plays out.
Gil is in so much trouble! I can’t believe he’s fought this long and this hard and he just gives up! I get that it’s discouraging to see Kadyn’s signal disappear, but how can he know that something bad has happened? He’s got to think about this! The battery just died in Kadyn’s helmet. The battery in his helmet almost died, so how can he not take that into consideration? Why does the loss of the signal have to mean something bad? I just want to reach into the panels of the book and shake some sense into him!
This has been an interesting book so far and I really can’t wait for the next issue. I could see the Zzazteks taking Gil back to their base or camp or whatever, and then here comes Dalla with Kadyn. There’s a happy reunion before the two realize that the Zzaztek are going to kill Kadyn for the artifact. I would not be surprised if something totally different from that happens.
I can’t believe Cody messed up with the details about the weapons. If not for the facility’s security and manager stepping in, they’d be dead at the hands of Bowser Weex. Lucky for Cody and Thena, they onknowingly made an unlikely friend with the Telepathist. But how much of that was the Telepathist and how much was the actual manager and staff?
I’m so happy Cody got a glimpse of where Cosmo is at and I’m also glad she’s being smart about it and not collecting him right away. Kaiser Crowe seems like the baddest of all the bad guys she had teamed up with and having her beloved Cosmo in harms way would be a bad idea.
And I’m speechless in regards to Thena and Viggo. Is she really that stupid to think Viggo isn’t pulling another con? I saw right through it immediately and I sure didn’t fall for his lies. Cody better be smart and convince Thena that Viggo is a born jerk. It wasn’t a surprise when he contacted his buddy with the info about Cody and Thena, but I was definitely surprised when I saw who his buddy was – Kaiser Crowe!!! That was a twist I was not expecting!
I absolutely love when all of my books are great! What a pleasant week, with lots of great stories to read. There were lots of crazy people this week! There wasn’t anything that stood out as obnoxious, boring, or the like this week and I’m looking forward to the continuation of these books as well as the new content next week.

In my Comic Box Recap article series, I want to talk about each of the comics that I read from my subscriptions that week. This issue starts off with Spock and Pike at the peace talk summit. We see Pike participating in cross-cultural activities with the Klingons. Pike is cautiously optimistic about an alliance between the Federation and the Klingons, while Spock is certain they should focus their time elsewhere. Spock’s presence at the conference is noticed by L’Rell, who asks him to advise her about her entourage. Kor is in charge of her safety and security, but he was also sent by his house to kill L’Rell. I was a little surprised that he addressed her after the bomb blast instead of trying to kill her, but I guess he might have been trying to keep up appearances. Or maybe Kor isn’t really planning to assassinate L’Rell?
Now let’s talk about the Shadows of Kahless – trench coat wearing, John Wick wannabes. They explosively crashed the summit with a bomb and put the smack down on L’Rell. They even shot Kor – which we know doesn’t kill him because he’s in TOS and DS9. So these Klingons are bad news and L’Rell didn’t know who they were, which tells me they’re operating outside of the government. Are they renegades? Are they civilians who have taken up arms? Are they a specialized group like Section 31 and the Tal Shiar, just without the Chancellor knowing? There are so many possibilities and I have no solid clues as to who they are. They could be working for Kor for all I know!
When the bomb went off, Pike and Spock ran, but were fired at by the Shadows of Kahless. The window behind them was damaged and Spock took Pike with him through the window to escape the assailants. On the last page, we see Spock carrying Pike through the blizzard, hopefully to safety.
I only had the one book this week for the article and it was explosive! The majority of that Star Trek issue was setup for the last few pages, where everything just came crashing down so fast. I really want to know who the Shadows of Kahless are. I guess I have to wait until next issue!
